Opportunity and Access

The hallmarks of truly great national and global universities are extraordinary scholars, excellent teaching, and groundbreaking research.  Over the next five years, we plan to invest more in programs like the undergraduate summer research program.

Launched in 2015, this competitive research opportunity is made possible through a partnership among the Office of Research, the Provost’s Office and the Student Association, and is designed to provide student scholars with the financial and academic support to sharpen their research skills by delving into a subject of their own choosing over a 10-week period during the summer break.

“I’m delighted that we could again partner with the Student Association to provide support to undergraduates for summer research and creative work,” said Peter Vanable, the associate provost for graduate studies and dean of the Graduate School. “The summer provides an ideal time for mentored experiences with our faculty. Often, such experiences are instrumental in inspiring career direction and plans for graduate training.”

This summer students are working across all fields including, health and exercise science, earth science, writing and rhetorical studies, biology and psychology.

The Invest Syracuse: Advancing Academic Excellence and the Student Experience initiative will empower faculty to develop more undergraduate research experiences, as we work to ensure every student has the opportunity to participate in research, scholarship or creative work regardless of academic discipline, and work under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
